31 Days of Horror: A Compilation of My Favorite Horror Films. Day 24: The Devil’s Advocate

The Devil’s Advocate (1997)

Why I love it:

  • This film is classified as a mystery/thriller, but it is also horror in my book due to the sinister subject matter and supernatural scenes.
  • It’s about Kevin Lomax, a southern defense attorney played by Keanu Reeves. He’s great at what he does, but he is willing to sell his soul in order to make it to the top in the field of law. He sells his soul by winning a case for a child molester who he knew good and well was guilty.
  • Al Pacino plays Milton, the devil and boy is he funny in this role. You really can’t  take him seriously as Ol’ Scratch, but he sure is entertaining–especially at the end when he goes into his blasphemous monologue.
  • There are elements of magic interwoven into the plot especially a form of magic which appears to be akin to Palo Mayombe. Delroy Lindo plays this spiritualist who is on trial for animal abuse after being caught in the middle of a ritual sacrifice. Lindo is believable in this role–a little too believable.
  • The dressing room shape-shifting scene.
  • The scene where Milton tells Mary Ann, played by Charlize Theron about her bad hairdo. Talk about throwing major shade.
  • Mary Ann and the baby dream sequence scene.
  • The scene where one of the lawyers gets killed by the gang of spirits in the park.
  • Charlize Theron did a pretty good job playing the faithful, yet spiritually aware wife. I loved how she catches onto the game quickly and doesn’t let up on Kevin. She is not blinded by the enticements: “I know we’ve got all this money, and it’s supposed to be OK, but it’s not.” she tells Kevin in a desperate plea for him to leave the firm.
  • Craig T. Nelson plays a guy who murdered his family and he is very credible in his role. He gets a nod since he starred in Poltergeist I & II. The red-headed dude who played the father in Beetlejuice is in this as well. Both do very well at playing shady characters.
  • The nice twist about Kevin Lomax being Milton, the devil’s son especially with Kevin’s mother being a devout fundamentalist Christian.

The Devil's Rejectsthe-devils-rejects

Day 13: The Devil’s Rejects (2005)

  • One of the creepiest and scariest films made post-2000 and I don’t scare too easily.
  • This movie just oozes evil, filth, debauchery, sin, and insanity. It will make you want to take a shower and dust yourself in baby powder after watching it.
  • It is a film written and directed by Rob Zombie, who’s pretty scary looking as it is so I knew it would be good. His wife plays “Baby” the sister of the sick, murderous clan.
  • Sid Haig plays Captain Spaulding, and boy is he frightening. I remember Sid Haig from the Pam Grier movie, Coffey (1973). I thought he was kind of scary in that movie. He does a great job playing bad guys. Damn.
  • There are quite a few scenes that will make your head spin and question why you are even sticking around ’til the end.
  • If you have a phobia of clowns, please do not torture yourself by watching this.
  • Otis, played by Bill Moseley is one nasty looking dude that I would hate to cross paths with. One of his lines is “I am the Devil and I am here to do the Devil’s work”. He says this right before he bludgeons his victim. He also says “I think I can still smell your wife’s pussy stink on my gun… hope it doesn’t rust the barrel.” My god!
  • The final scene is one of the best when it comes to horror films in my opinion. These punks finally get what they deserve. The song, Free Bird is playing which adds to the intensity of the scene.
  • The song Midnight Rider by the Allman Brothers is featured in the beginning scene where Otis and Baby are trying to evade the police. Great choice since it instantly puts you in a 70’s frame of mind. I love the song too.
  • The detective assigned to the case is hardcore and will stop at nothing to see that justice is meted out.
  • The title of the film describes the content perfectly. These people are so evil, trashy and low down that the Devil doesn’t even want to associate with them. Lol.
  • Actor Danny Trejo is in the film as you would expect him to be. He is always cast in the hardcore violent films.

Disclaimer on the Law of Karma

Karma pic

Yesterday I posted an article on the subject of Karma written by Stuart Wilde. Basically, he broke down the time frames of Karma starting with Instant Karma and ending with Long-term Karma. I am piggy-backing off of this article to interject a bit of a disclaimer.

Understanding the Law of Karma and even reincarnation for that matter still leaves some questions unanswered. I’ll give you two:

If karma is real why does it seem that people who lean on the side of good have more instant karma than people who lean on the side of evil?

If karma is a form of Divine Justice why has evil been able to dominate the world and why are evil doers handsomely rewarded through riches and power?

These questions used to plague my mind even with having full knowledge and understanding of the Law of Karma, which is essentially the Law of Cause and Effect. One only has to take a cursory look at history to see that evil has prevailed for thousands of years. One has to only go as far as their family or their surrounding area to see how generally good people often get hit with the hardest karma. Also, what about countries and regions? Do certain areas have better karma than others? Does the United States for instance have better karma than say, Haiti? Surely the U.S. has as much blood on its flag as Haiti—even more so. Does karma apply to corporations as well? Does Apple have better karma than Microsoft? Does Target have better karma than Wal-Mart? Is there a special place in hell for greedy CEOs? Is there a particular part of purgatory for corrupt politicians? Why does it seem that evil and corruption can continue unhindered if the Law of Karma is so much in effect?

My answer to these questions is that some people and systems are exempted from the Law of Karma. These people operate outside of the Law of Karma—that is the karma that they incur in their present incarnation. However, I believe that these people who are currently exempt will have to deal with karma, the Big K once they die. I believe that the Universe will allow those people who deem themselves exempt to rack up a large karmic debt that will have to be paid in future incarnations. It is like karma on credit—no payments ‘til you die! I personally would rather pay off my karma as I incur it in this lifetime than be facing a mountain of karmic debt once I cross over. So how do these people sign up for the karmic exemption? It is quite simple. They do not have much of a conscience or they lack a conscience entirely. This describes your average psychopath and this is how psychopaths can get away with murder—literally in some cases. It is our conscience that creates the phenomenon of Instant Karma in my opinion. The thief who gets caught is usually the thief with a conscience. His subconscious wills himself to set himself up to get caught so that his karma can go into effect. Maybe the thief will learn, maybe he will not, but by being charged with a crime and suffering through the resulting punishment he is in fact accepting the Law of Karma, albeit subconsciously. Most petty thieves do have consciences and this is why they make up the majority of prisoners.  The bigger, usually white-collar corporate/banker thieves don’t have much of a conscience—at least when it comes to the public at large.  They are able to exist inside of an institutional karma-free bubble that legitimizes and even rewards unfettered greed. The Law of Karma does not apply here. Nor does it apply to governments. They are insulated from Instant Karma as well. I am convinced that the more self-aware one is and the more conscientious they are the quicker their karma will be. It is a cycle that you choose to participate in. You can try to opt out and pay later. However, the subconscious is not easily fooled so if you think you can switch from being a well-intentioned individual to one who operates through evil intent in order to escape Instant Karma you are in for a rude awakening. Once you have chosen a side, you are usually stuck.

Now I must bring astrology into the discussion and I believe that this will help to clarify the subject of karma even more. In astrology, the planet Saturn represents the Law of Karma among other things. Saturn also deals with the material realm. It deals with reality—what is solid and concrete. Saturn also deals with governments and big corporations. Saturn deals with both punishment and reward on a material plane so it does in fact represent the meting out of karma—whether it is good or bad. Now Saturn is the ruler of this world, the Earthly realm and as I just stated previously, Saturn deals with reality. But…as a lot of enlightened individuals are aware, we have the power to create our own reality. Those at the top who are bent on doing evil are well aware of this esoteric truth too and since they celebrate Saturn (aka Satan) and uphold its materialistic tenets, Saturn in turn becomes an ally to them. They work with Saturn’s carnal flow rather than against it. They are in bed with Saturn/Satan and thus they create their own reality that is not subject to the law of their own bedeviled bedfellow. Thus, this world becomes theirs to behold and we become mere subjects of Saturn/Satan and his minions (The Holy Bible touches on this theme a great deal). This is why Satanists believe that they should be able to do whatever they want—including preying upon the weak. Saturn does not have a heart (think the Tin Man from The Wizard of OZ. He represents Jupiter corrupted by Saturn who is represented by the Wicked Witch of the East. Jupiter is a goodwill, benefic planet that represents the Godly force. A similar theme can be found in 2001: A Space Odyssey with the monolith representing Saturn). There is no compassionate soft side to Saturn. Saturn is the punisher, the taskmaster, the materialist and opportunist. Saturn is about death, desolation and degradation. Even at its highest manifestation which includes respect, recognition and honor, Saturn is still a staunch materialist. It has no time (Saturn also rules time) for spiritual concerns or love for humanity. It is because this world is largely influenced by Saturn that those at the top can continue to do evil without karmic retribution. However, once they leave this Earthly/Saturnalia realm, I truly believe that Saturn will turn his back on them and become their punisher instead of material savior.

So to reiterate, the more of a conscience you have the more you will be punished by Instant Karma when doing wrong. The less conscience one has the more debt they will have to pay back in the next lifetime. Sometimes I have to remind myself—especially when I am full of despair or plagued with confusion—that this Earth is the realm of Saturn and that we are subject to its Laws. Once I remember this element of Universal Law everything makes sense. Unfortunately, God is not in control, for God endows us with Free Will. Saturn is the one in control. Always remember that.

October: Dark and Lovely

Ahhhh. It’s October 1st. October is one of my favorite months. That’s because it is the height of autumn and the weather is beautiful pretty much wherever you go. As a resident of the Phoenix metro area in Arizona I am particularly fond of the autumn season since this is when the temperatures become milder, but you can still wear shorts. The autumn sunsets in Arizona are indeed spectacular. October also marks the height of the zodiac sign Libra. Libra is about harmony, balance and one’s relationships to others. It is about art, beauty and symmetry. Justice, fairness and equality. My Venus is in Libra in the 9th house which gives me a heightened aesthetic sensitivity. I practically worship beauty in all of its form and fashion.

October is also a time that marks the celebration of Halloween of course with its pagentry of demons, goblins and ghouls. Witches, wizards, and warlocks. Skulls, skeletons, and scythes. It is essentially the American version of the Spanish Dia de los muertos. Growing up under the canopy of a very restrictive religion, Seventh Day Adventism did not preclude my celebration of this sinister holiday. I wasn’t allowed to wear nail polish or have pierced ears, but on one day out of the year my siblings and I were able to demonstrate our devilish side. Looking back it now seems very paradoxical. We were told things like “never say your prayers out loud because the devil may hear you and attack them”. We were not allowed to watch TV or do any “worldy” activities from sun down Friday evening until sundown Saturday evening–just like orthodox Jews. I always resented the SDA church for that. So much fear was instilled in me through Seventh Day Adventism to follow the commandments of the bible as well as the church, yet on one day we could celebrate the dark side. It still doesn’t make sense to me and it never will. It also never made sense why my father who was the ringleader of this SDA charade would be so pious, yet he maintained a stack of porno mags to peruse at his disposal. My father is a 7th Day Adventist to this day and probably still an avid porn viewer as well. Both can be toxic to one’s mental and spiritual health. Combined, I believe they create a synergistic poisonous concoction with the fallout being guilt and inner turmoil.

For those who travel the left hand path, this is a very significant time of year. A lot of rituals are conducted and a lot of blood is spilled in the name of sacrifice. Some of this blood is of the innocent including children. This continues through the Christmas season. This is also the time of year where child kidnappings are at their highest. We need to be aware of what we are representing when we don that devil or vampire mask. Are we aware that we are representing the dark or shadow side of our very selves? It’s all fun when the mask can easily come off. Yet we have many souls who are trapped in their own shadow; who cannot or choose not to remove the demonic mask for whatever reason. What are we really celebrating? What are we really doing?

Demons are real, ghosts are real, vampires are real, ghouls are very real. Yet most party-goers believe it not. It’s just all fun and games, right? Talk to some real people who have heard strange bumps in the night. http://www.djinnuniverse.com/tell-us-your-djinn-story

Be aware that there are many things unseen out there.

Remember on that 31st night that the path you choose is always either left or right.

If you want to dress up, represent correctly and always be ready to face your fears directly.
